nPower Software announces Power Solids 2.0 for Rhino

San Diego, September 17, 2003 - nPower Software announces release 2.0 of Power Solids for Rhino.  Power Solids 2.0 introduces significant new functionality, improves performance and user interface, and provides bug fixes for reported problems.  Power Solids extends Rhino to support additional Solids Modeling functionality.  Power Solids adds three new commands to Rhino:  Power Filleting, Power Shelling, and Power Boolean Tree.  Power Filleting provides variable and constant radius fillets and chamfers, with automatic blend corner creation.  Power Shelling gives the ability to apply offsets to connected sets of surfaces and open Polysurfaces in Rhino.  Power Boolean Tree provides Boolean operations on NURBS and meshes, and STL compliant mesh generation.  The powerful combination of Rhino with Power Solids provides a geometric modeling tool set equivalent or superior to those found in high-end (and high priced) Solids Modeling products.  

New in Power Solids 2.0
This is a major update to Rhino Power Solids. It contains the following new features:

  • Bug fixes in all areas
  • G2 and G3 Continuity Filleting
  • Offset Solid from Surfaces / Polysurfaces
  • Optional Automatic Boolean Updating
  • Significant Usability Improvements

Offset Solids
Offset Solids are new to the Shelling Tool.  Offset Solids provide the user with the ability to construct Solids from Surfaces by applying an offset.  This type of operation is very useful for practical design work, where surfaces usually need some thickness.  Car bodies, ship hulls, and sheet metal are some of the applications which require offset solids.  

G2 & G3 Blended Fillets
Power Solids' Filleting Tool provides some exceptionally smooth, organic looking fillets, which include new G2, and G3 options.  G2 fillets use the second derivative of the adjacent faces to yield a blend result which is curvature continuous.  G3 fillets also use the third derivative of the adjacent faces to make the rate of change in curvature across the boundaries continuous.  The images on the right show each of these new filleting types (including the Rhino zebra display of each type shown on the second row).  The elbows on the left use circular arc fillets.  The center images show G2 fillets, and the G3 fillets are on the right.  Note how smooth and continuous the blending of the G3 fillet is.

Persistent Boolean Tree
The Boolean Tree Tool includes a dockable Boolean history tree to facilitate design revisions.  It gives the user quick access to the important parametric features of his design.  At any time, the user can add new Boolean operations, edit the operations, modify the primitives and update the Boolean result.  The active Boolean history tree allows engineers and designers  to quickly and easily make design revisions without having to reconstruct their model.  The Boolean Tree Tool also now includes the option to automatically update the Booleans for immediate user feedback.
